I think Apple lost me taking so long on iOS 5 this year, I'm quite bored with my iPhone by now and getting antsy for something new. It just sits in this loop for as long as you let it. Tried updating iTunes and even fully removing it and freshly installed it. I seriously hope that someone can find a solution soon. I'm not exactly sure how to manually sync the iPod but I'll try to figure that out.

I too have it connected via USB. Just a huge pain.
